Open cholecystectomy used to be the standard approach for gallbladder removal before the advent of laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The laparoscopic approach involves smaller incisions and generally results in shorter recovery times. However, open cholecystectomy may still be preferred in cases where laparoscopic surgery is not feasible due to patient factors or complications.
